  • Garden of the Gods, Colorado Springs

Colorado (population about 5 million) is notable for its diverse geography, which includes alpine mountains, high plains, deserts and sand dunes, and deep canyons. It encompasses most of the Southern Rocky Mountains, as well as the northeastern portion of the Colorado Plateau and the western edge of the Great Plains.

The capital, Denver, has the Rocky Mountains right on the doorstep and boasts 300 days of sunshine a year. Other larger Colorado cities include Boulder, Colorado Springs, and Pueblo.

Natural history and beauty take precedence in Colorado: the state is home to the Colorado River, four national parks, huge recreation areas, eight national wildlife refuges, and national monuments and historic sites, including the stunning Dinosaur National Monument and Arches National Park. Hikers love Rocky Mountain National Park, which is divided by the Continental Divide, and Pikes Peak Wonders region with its striking natural features, including its namesake Pikes Peak.

Colorado is also known for its famous ski towns, including trendy Aspen and Vail. Across the state, beautiful towns are packed with recreation offerings, historic sites, scenic vistas, abundant wildlife, and walkable streets filled with galleries, shops, and mouth-watering dinner options (Colorado is known for its Southwest, Mexican, and regional Rocky Mountain cuisine).

Wyatt Earp and Buffalo Bill Cody come to mind here and there, but the magnificent vistas provided by snow-capped mountains, brilliant blue skies and towering rock formations in Colorado might leave the deepest impression.
