Classic Aussie Rail Spectacular

Duration
12 Days
Prices From:
US$ 4,599

FIRST-CLASS | TAILOR-MADE: This 12-day adventure combines two of Australia’s famous rail journeys: The Indian Pacific and The Ghan. Starting in Sydney, you will travel through the best of South Australia before going on to Ayers Rock and the Great Barrier Reef. Explore the Australian outback and beyond aboard these luxury trains.

This 12-day adventure starts in Sydney, then takes you to the best of South Australia before going on to Ayers Rock and the Great Barrier Reef.

Depart Sydney in comfort aboard the Indian Pacific, Australia's most famous rail journey. Though the service extends all the way to Perth, you'll disembark in Adelaide, a cultural hub surrounded by terrific wine regions. If you have time, visit one of its galleries or museums, or take in a performance at one of the city’s famous cabaret venues. Just to the south, you’ll spend a night at Kangaroo Island, one of Australia’s most unique wildlife areas. In addition to seeing plenty of the namesake marsupials, you’ll visit a sea lion colony, a honey farm, and Flinders Chase National Park, home to many of the Island’s geological icons such as Remarkable Rocks and Admiral’s Arch.

All aboard the famous Ghan train for your second perfectly appointed journey into the outback! Enjoy superior service with all the amenities as you travel into Australia’s red centre, channelling the spirit of the country’s early explorers. Your destination is Alice Springs, the gateway to Central Australia. Rest for a night here, then go on to Uluru – also known as Ayers Rock. This is not a short drive, but it is a spectacular one, passing through the MacDonnell and James Ranges.

Accommodation here offers you superb views of Uluru, ideal for enjoying Australia’s most impressive sunset over cocktails. On your second night, experience the Sounds of Silence – a unique chance to dine under the desert stars. With a full day here, you’ll have the option to either climb Uluru, or take a tour of its base to gain an insight into the monolith’s tremendous cultural significance. Keep in mind, Uluru is sacred to the local Aboriginal people, and as such, they respectfully ask tourists to opt for the base tour, rather than climbing.

Fly to tropical Cairns, where the Great Barrier Reef awaits. You’ll visit the Agincourt Reef, a well preserved section ideal for snorkelers and divers of all skill levels. If you’d rather not get wet, watch the fish from the comfort of an underwater viewing platform. Back on dry land, climb aboard the train to Kuranda, situated in the North Queensland rainforest. From here, you’ll be guided deep into the bush, where you’ll enjoy an Aboriginal dance performance, BBQ lunch, and the chance to throw a boomerang. Visit the Koala and Wildlife Park before you depart aboard the Skyrail. This impressive 7.5 kilometre gondola takes you over the trees back to Cairns, ready for departure.

Day 3

Seal Bay Guided Beach Walk, Kangaroos and Koalas in the Wild

Early morning pick up from your Adelaide or Glenelg hotel for a scenic coach journey to Cape Jervis taking in the picturesque Fleurieu Peninsula with its vineyards, coastal views and rolling hills.
On arrival, board the SeaLink Kangaroo Island ferry for the 45 minute crossing to Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island -- ferry options only. On arrival at Penneshaw or Kingscote Airport you will be met by your local guide and your island nature experience begins with an introduction to Kangaroo Island. Tour through several island habitats and see wildlife in their natural environments. Kangaroo Island is a haven for Australian wildlife, which exists in its natural habitat without the threat of introduced predators. Listen to the distinct sounds of the native birdlife as they chorus from the tall eucalyptus trees. Kangaroo Island is home to some 250 species of birds, many of which, through isolation from the mainland, have developed their own subspecies and are therefore unique to Kangaroo Island. As you travel the island keep an eye out for echidnas, wallabies, reptiles and wildflowers.
At the spectacular Seal Bay Conservation Park, your guide will escort you on a memorable walk along the beach. This bay is home to a healthy Australian sea lion colony. Walk among the sea lions as they bask on the beach or among the sand dunes after their extensive fishing expedition. With your guide you are able to stand at a safe distance to these wonderful endangered creatures and hear them sigh and watch them at play. This is a truly unforgettable experience -- one that you will treasure forever.
Enter our exclusive Heritage-listed natural bush property to enjoy a delicious gourmet picnic style lunch with South Australian wine. Follow your lunch with a pleasant bushwalk or a stroll along the beach. Travel through the island's interior keeping an eye out for koalas and echidnas. Explore the spectacular beaches and enjoy a bushwalk. Listen for Australia's rarest cockatoo, the Kangaroo Island glossy black cockatoo and watch out for the Tammar wallaby, with its small fine features, in its natural habitat.

Travel to the western end of the island and discover the Flinders Chase National Park, one of the oldest and most important national parks in South Australia. While travelling through this remote country, your friendly driver/guide will provide an informative and entertaining commentary. Learn the natural and geological history of the region, as well as the unique Australian desert flora and fauna such as the Perentie monitor lizard, the thorny devil and the red kangaroo. Also hear about the traditional customs and beliefs of the local Aboriginals.

Field of Light Pass

The critically acclaimed Field of Light Uluru by the internationally celebrated artist Bruce Munro is on display and due to popular demand, has now been extended indefinitely. The exhibition, aptly named Tili Wiru Tjuta Nyakutjaku or "looking at lots of beautiful lights" in local Pitjantjatjara is Munro's largest work to date. Overwhelming in size, covering more than seven football fields, it invites immersion in its fantasy garden of 50,000 spindles of light, the stems breathing and swaying through a sympathetic desert spectrum of ochre, deep violet, blue and gentle white.

The Field of Light experience begins with a convenient hotel pick-up and short transfer to the remote desert location. As darkness has fallen, the 50,000 slender stems crowned with radiant frosted-glass spheres will gently bloom with rhythms of coloured light. Temporarily lose yourself in this monumental light installation as its pathways draw you in.
