Duration
9 Days
Prices From:

DELUXE | PRIVATE-GUIDED: With stays in the capital, Seoul, historic Gyeongju and its archaeological sites, the port of Busan and idyllic island of Jeju, this itinerary will give you an excellent insight into Korea.

Korea is often referred to as the "Land of the Morning Calm”. This journey is perfect for those who are looking to experience true Korean culture as Korea has 5,000 years of unique cultural history.

Seoul, the capital of South Korea, is a city of contrasts where the new and the old co-exist in perfect harmony. Ancient palaces combine with modern cultural facilities and popular shopping districts. Seoul offers shoppers a wide variety of merchandise at large department stores, duty-free shops and at open air markets and arcades.

During your stay, visit Gyeongbokgung Palace which was rebuilt in 1868. Situated nearby, the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History, is dedicated to researching, preserving, and exhibiting the modern and contemporary history of the Republic of Korea. Also visit Insadong Arts and Crafts Street, famous for its antique stores and Gwangjang Market, offering a taste of traditional Korean cuisine.

Leave for Gyeongju by morning train. For 1000 years until the 10th century, Gyeongju was the capital of the Silla Dynasty. Now, almost 1000 years later, Gyeongju is an open-air museum with the remains of temples, tombs, shrines, palaces, gardens and castles. In the centre of town, Royal Tumuli Park is a huge walled area with 20 royal tombs. Nearby is Cheomseongdae, one of the oldest observatories in Eastern Asia. The finest example of Silla temple architecture is Bulguksa, a magnificent temple built on a series of stone terraces just outside Gyeongju. High above the temple, a seated Buddha gazes over Gyeongju from the Seokguram Grotto also visited.

There will be time to go to the Gyeongju National Museum with its collection of mainly Silla relics, Anapji Pond, an artificial lake surrounded by buildings which were part of the palace complex of ancient Silla, the Arts and Crafts Centre and the Silla Millenium Park, a theme park focusing on the Silla period.

Next stop is Busan, South Korea's largest port and second largest metropolis. En route there, stop at Korea’s largest temple, the impressive Tongdosa Temple. During your stay in Busan, visit Haeundae Beach, the Nurimaru APEC House, an imposing and beautiful meeting centre located on an island, the Busan Aquarium and the UN Memorial Cemetery located in a serene park which honours soldiers from 16 countries killed during the Korean War. Then one more stop at the unique Yongungsa Seaside Temple.

Fly from Busan to Jeju Island, a place of myths and legends. According to legend, three demi-gods emerged from Samsunghyeol which is said to have been on the northern slopes of Mount Halla and became the creators of the Jeju people who founded the Kingdom. One in five of the population earns their living from the sea, and in many families, the women have been divers for generations. At 1950 metres/6350 feet, Mount Halla is the highest peak in Korea visible all over the island. Jeju is a popular tourist destination and offers not only good weather and beaches but exceptional natural landscapes.

During your stay here, visit the Dragon Head Rock where you can see the Haeneo woman divers working to catch seafood, Samseonghyeol Shrine where according to legend, it was here that three demigods emerged from the ground to become the founding fathers of Jeju, the Halla Botanical Garden and the Jeju Folklore and Natural History.

The next day, it’s time to take in some of the stunning beauty of the island. Start with the Sangumburi Crater, an extinct volcano. The crater is 100 metres/325 feet deep. Over 400 species of plants and animals live inside the crater. Next is the Manjang Lava Cave, one of the longest lava tubes in the world. The cave is academically significant as rare species live in the cave and it is considered to be a world class tourist attraction.

After lunch, visit the Seongsan Sunrise Peak which rose from under the sea in a volcanic eruption over 100,000 years ago. With 99 sharp rocks surrounding the crater, it looks like a gigantic crown. The sunrise from the crater is magnificent.  Then it’s on to the Folklore Village and finally head to the Jeju “Mysterious Road” which connects 2 highways and earned its name, as objects and liquid appear to roll and flow up the hill instead of down, actually an optical illusion.

Day 2

Full Day Seoul Tour

This morning, you'll be met by your guide in the lobby of your hotel to begin your full-day exploration of South Korea's vibrant capital city. Begin with a visit to Gyeongbokbung Palace, where you'll witness the Palace Royal Guard changing ceremony and the palace. Built-in 1395, Gyeongbokgung Palace was the first and largest of the royal palaces built during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). Next visit to "Bukchon Hanok Village." This Village is home to hundreds of traditional houses, called hanok, that date back to the Joseon dynasty. Bukchon, which was the central residence of nobles and bureaucrats during the Joseon Dynasty, is a place called a city street museum because of its many historic sites, cultural assets, and folklore materials.

After enjoying lunch at a local restaurant, visit "The National Museum of Korean Contemporary History" to see the history of South Korea from the late 19th century to the present. Tour will continue on to visit Insadong Arts and Crafts Street. Insadong Street is one of the most popular areas in Seoul and represents the focal point of Korean traditional culture and crafts. Stores in Insadong specialize in a wide variety of goods that can only be purchased or appreciated in Korea: hanbok (traditional clothing), hanji (traditional paper), traditional teas, pottery, and folk crafts. Today's tour will end at "Gwangjang Market". This historic market opened in the early 20th century and is home to a number of clothing and food stalls, offering tourists a taste of traditional Korean cuisine. Starting with 'Mayak gimbap', one of Koreans' all-time favorite snacks, and Nokdu-jeon (Mung Bean Pancake), visitors can sample a range of Korean delicacies. Other traditional treats such as Tteok-bokki (Stir-fried Rice Cake) and eomuk (Fish Cake) are also available.
Following your tour, you'll be transferred back to your hotel for the remainder of the day and evening at your leisure.

Day 3

Gyeongju Tour

This morning, you'll be met by your local driver in the lobby of your hotel and transferred to Seoul Station where you'll have your first experience on South Korea's KTX high-speed trains as you travel 2 hours to Gyeongju. Upon arrival at Singyeongju Station, you'll be met by your local guide and escorted to a local restaurant for lunch. After lunch, proceed to Yangdong Village for a tour of this traditional yangban village from the Joseaon dynasty. Yangban residences with tile roof houses are found up in the valleys where residents stay cool in summer and warm in winter. Thatched-roof residences that belong to the commoners are clustered below them. The landscape in the village was rearranged in line with Joseon's hierarchical social order set by different classes.

Then move back to downtown Gyeongju city and visit the historic Hwangridan-gil Street. Cafes and restaurants on the street are designed and inspired from hanoks, the Korea traditional houses. Hwangridan-gil itself is a wonderful place where you can see the past and the present of Gyeongju. Following your tour, you'll be transferred and checked into your hotel for the remainder of the day and evening at your leisure.
