FIRST-CLASS | PRIVATE-GUIDED: Located by the Mekong River, Phnom Penh has much to offer including the Royal Palace and its Silver Pagoda, shopping at the Russian Market and experiencing the infamous Killing Fields.

Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, is located on the banks of the MekongRiver and was once the loveliest French-built city in Indochina in the 1920’s, now somewhat faded. The RoyalPalace is made up of four compounds and built in the style of original Khmer architecture. It has been occupied by the Kings of Cambodia since it was built in 1860. The area where the King resides is closed to the public. Visit the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, the Throne Hall and the Silver Pagoda which contains many national treasures including its gold and jewelled Buddha statues. Also visit the NationalMuseum with the world’s largest collection of Khmer art including ceramics, sculptures and bronzes. There are over 14,000 items housed here. Next is a visit to the bustling Russian Market where almost anything can be bought and is frequented by the locals.

Later visit the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, a ghoulish but fascinating converted school which served as a prison during the Khmer Rouge regime and the Cambodia civil war. It is said that thousands of prisoners were interred and that only 7 survived. Afterwards head out of the city to the Killing Fields so called due to the number of people who were killed and buried here. It is estimated that there are 20,000 graves containing the bodies of a million plus victims. It is now a serene memorial dedicated to this disastrous era.

Day 2

Full Day Phnom Penh City Tour

This morning, you will visit the Royal Palace, which was built in 1866 by King Norodom. The Palace is actually a number of structures within a pagoda-style compound. Silver Pagoda located within the Royal Palace compound, the Silver Pagoda is so names because of its floor, which is made up of 5,000 silver tiles. The treasures are a solid gold Buddha encrusted with 9, 584 diamonds and weighing 90kilos and a small 17th century emerald and baccarat crystal Buddha. Next visit the National Museum, which houses Khmer art especially sculptures, from different periods of Cambodian history, 19th century dance costumes, royal barges and palanquins. Shopping at Russian Market.

This afternoon, you will visit the Toul Sleng Genocide Museum, a former high school. In the Pol Pot time they took this school as a prison for detentions and torture of prisoners. After interrogation the prisoners were transferred to Cheung Ek, to be killed. Then continue to visit Cheung Ek, a profoundly moving but depressing experience. During the Khmer Rouge years, thousands of Cambodians were tortured and imprisoned in Toul Sleng. They were then moved to the extermination camps at Choeng Ek where they were bludgeoned to death. They were buried in mass graves and today over 8,000 skulls are displayed behind the glass of a memorial stupa, erected in 1988 to honor those who died.
