FIRST-CLASS | TAILOR-MADE: Stopover in Tokyo to take in a sumo match and learn about Japan’s beloved national sport. A city tour will introduce you to many of Tokyo’s most popular landmarks, including Senso-ji, before you head to Ryogoku to watch the grand sumo tournament and learn about the history of the sport at the Sumo Museum.

This 4-day Japanese vacation takes you to Tokyo for a sumo match. It features first-class accommodations, shared tours, and is a perfect stopover for anyone with an interest in sumo and Japanese culture.

Your journey begins in Tokyo, the Japanese capital and the world’s largest city. Whether you’re interested in the latest technological innovations or medieval temples, you’ll find what you’re looking for in Tokyo. On your first full day, you’ll see some of the city’s most popular landmarks on a morning tour. Start at Meiji Jingu Shrine, an austere temple in the midst of a city park. The temple was built in dedication to Emperor Meiji, who opened up the country to the world in the late 19th century. Continue past the stunning East Gardens of the Imperial Palace and reach the old district of Asakusa, where you’ll visit the massive red Buddhist temple of Senso-ji. Stroll down bustling Nakamise shopping street before hopping over to Ginza to find high-end clothing retailers and department stores.

The next day, head to Ryogoku, the traditional home of Japanese wrestling, to attend the Sumo Museum and see a sumo match, one of Japan’s most time-honoured sports. The main exhibition in Ryogoku Kokugikan has several sumo exhibits and changes six times a year to reflect different interests. You’ll watch a sumo match from the second floor B seats and have a chance to see other things of interest, including the championship flags decorating the main lobby. You’ll also visit the Sumo Museum to learn about the history of sumo in Japan and see woodblock prints, folding screens, and ceremonial aprons dating back to the Edo period.

You’ll have another night in Tokyo before departing the following morning. However, you should consider extending your stay in Tokyo to see all that the city has to offer.
