Family Fun Adventure in Costa Rica: San Jose to San Jose

Duration
8 Days
Prices From:
US$ 2,240

FIRST-CLASS | TAILOR-MADE: The safest, most colourful, and wildlife-rich destination in Central America, Costa Rica is a natural vacation choice for families looking to combine nature, thrills, and a warm escape from the winter. This round-trip from San Jose combines the best known destinations with lesser known highlights.

This 8-day Costa Rica vacation is an ideal choice for families, combining fun and educational attractions with opportunities for relaxing, hiking, and sampling some of Costa Rica’s most delicious treats.

Staying in Sarapiquil, start with a visit to La Paz Waterfall Gardens. Bringing Costa Rica’s colourful plant and bird life together, the gardens are designed as the perfect introduction to the country’s wildlife for families, giving guests a chance to see the local treasures up close. Wander the trail down past the spectacular waterfalls, and visit the hummingbird gallery, serpentarium, aviary, and butterfly garden, plus exhibits devoted to jungle cats and frogs. You’ll also learn a little about the local banana industry, a major commodity for the region. Go on the La Tirimbina Biological Reserve, home of the cacao fruit (read: chocolate!) and learn about the process – with tastings of course! A Sarapiqui River safari completes your exploration of this beautiful region.

The Arenal volcano and its surrounds make up one of Costa Rica’s most popular and iconic regions. Spend two nights here exploring the rivers, hot springs, and lagoons, and coming face to face with the wildlife. While the volcano has been resting since 2010, the naturally heated thermal water creates a thrilling aquatic playground to beat any water park at home. The fauna in this region is equally stunning, including white-faced capuchin monkeys, sloths, coatis, deer, and more, plus three quarters of Costa Rica’s 850 bird species. Take to the forest canopy on your last afternoon here to explore via aerial tram and hanging bridge walks.

Time to head to the beach! Manuel Antonio Beach, to be exact. Enjoy the white sand, blue lagoons and widespread green forests. You’ll have a chance to relax and unwind, but also have the opportunity to walk several trails to see the region’s wildlife. One included walk is flat and easy, with a guide along to put your sightings in context. Enjoy a stop at the beach along the way.

Day 5

Arenal

We visit this morning the Arenal Volcano National Park. The park's primary rainforest is exuberant and includes four different micro-climates, making it the home of an enormous amount of flora and fauna. These include white-faced capuchin monkeys, sloths, coatis, deer, and much more. Birds are abundant here; almost 75% of Costa Rica's total 850 species reside in these forests.
During this gentle hike, you will be able to enjoy the most extraordinary view of the colossus, walking around its base. The hike begins on a trail close to the volcano, a path that will take you through the forest, over recent lava flows, and the area destroyed by the 1969 eruption (now in regeneration process).
In the afternoon, we take part of an aerial tram ride and a nice walk along the hanging bridges. The tram ride takes you to a wide observation platform at the highest point of Arenal Reserve. The ride on the open-aired gondolas offers unique volcano views and rises 236mts across a 1250mts long trip. Once at the lookout point, you can sit down on comfortable chairs to enjoy picture time within this magnificent view.
Afterwards, you will go on a walk through the rainforest along the hanging bridges. You will be surprised at how different it is to observe the forest from the tops of the trees. From the beginning of your walk, you will be ascending step by step until you find yourself as high up as the vegetation that surrounds you (up to 39.5mts/130ft.).
Local guides accompany each tour and help visitors learn about native plant and animal species.
