DELUXE | PRIVATE-GUIDED: Experience the classical sites of South America’s most-popular country, Peru. First discover the nation's capital, Lima, before visiting Cusco. Later, you'll pass into the picturesque Sacred Valley of the Incas for an incredible 3 night stay, culminating with a visit to the country’s crown jewel, Machu Picchu.

This 9-day Classic Itinerary is designed to allow you to travel independently, have everything arranged for you in advance, and see the major highlights of Peru, from its major cities of Lima and Cusco to Machu Picchu.

Your trip to Peru begins in the capital of Lima, one of the driest capitals in the world. This fog-draped city offers up history, food, and nightlife so no matter your disposition, you’ll find something to suit you here. A half day tour will make sure you don’t miss the highlights of the colonial era, such as the Plaza de Armas, the city’s 16th-century heart, as well as the Larco Herrera Museum, which showcases pre-colonial art. Apart from the tour, you’re free to explore the city on your own, surveying its architectural wonders and enjoy its gastronomic pleasures. If you feel like indulging, head to the restaurants Astrid y Gaston, Maido, or Central—they’re considered three of the top 50 restaurants in the world.

Pass from Peru’s capital to Cusco, the oldest continuously-inhabited city on the continent. If Lima is the toast of modern Peru, Cusco is its cultural heart. It served as the capital of the Inca Empire for 500 years before the Spanish invaded in the 16th century. Today, it’s a city boasting colonial buildings and vibrant city squares and boulevards at every turn. Spend your time in Cusco strolling the historical quarters, seeing the gorgeous Cusco Cathedral and the Church of La Compania de Jesus in Plaza de Amres Cusco, as well as the old Spanish quarter of Barrio de San Blas.

Head into the Sacred Valley of the Incas, stopping by Moray to see the remarkable amphitheatre-like bowls the Incas carved out of the hillside and Maras to see the famous salt pools. The crown jewel of the valley is Machu Picchu, the most popular archaeological site in South America and possibly the entire world. Machu Picchu has an undeniable air of mystery to it. The city remained hidden for centuries, unknown to the conquering Spaniards, until American explorer Hiram Bingham visited the site in 1911 and announced its existence to the western world. Of course, not even such a story can match the actual site of Machu Picchu itself. As you explore its dry-stone walls and incredible terraces, it’ll be as if you're walking among the clouds, stepping on the top of the world. Breathe in the fresh air and take it all in. This is truly one of the wonders of the world.
