Grand Tour of France

Duration
25 Days
Prices From:
US$ 11,270

FIRST-CLASS | TAILOR-MADE: This 25-day journey of France explores its rich diversity, history and culture combined with experiences. See the City of Light and climb the Eiffel Tower, sip Champagne and stay in a Chateau, experience the gastronomic capital of the world, visit charming towns and villages in the South, taste Bordeaux wines from its vineyards, explore Chateaux and wine in Loire and discover the historical significance of Normandy and the unmissable Mont Saint Michel.

Inspired by King Charles IX’s grand tour of France (taken at the behest of his mother Catherine de Medici), this 25-day trip is a Francophile’s dream, encompassing art, history, architecture, food, and the very best this beautiful nation has to offer.

No capital city in the world captures our collective imaginations quite like Paris. Take a hop-on, hop-off sightseeing tour and Seine cruise on your first full day, taking in the sights that interest you. A walking tour and cheese and wine tasting in the charismatic Montmartre district also reveal a different, more local side of Paris. Then, depart for Reims, for two full days exploring the world’s most famous bubbly in the Champagne region. Join an intimate small group tour for tastings, and take a private champagne cruise on the Marne River.

From the world’s most famous bubbles to the world capital of gastronomy, Lyon will have your tastebuds dancing to mouth-watering creations both traditional and cutting edge. Learn about the history and culinary traditions of this beautiful town, and how they have intersected over the years. Then embark on a wine tour through the magical Beaujolais region. In the afternoon, step back to the Middle Ages in the pretty town of Pérouges. The Medieval theme continues as you discover the medieval villages of Luberon in the Provence region. There is so much to see here, you’ll have a day at leisure to explore any sights that may interest you, or simply relax in the idyllic countryside.

Ready for the Riviera? Unwind by the Mediterranean in Nice, with a city tour before going on to ritzy Monaco and Monte Carlo. This playground for the rich and famous welcomes you with stunning cliffside views that can happily be accessed on any budget. Then bid the Mediterranean farewell and head to Bordeaux, another must-do gourmet stop and home to some of France’s most famous wines. A tasting tour invites you to experience the region’s devotion to great bread and cheese, while a trip to the Medoc wine region immerses you in its rich vintner history, with tastings of course!

Go on to Tours and marvel at its enormous cathedral. A city in love with art and culture, Tours is also the centre of another great French wine region. Swap red wines for white as you sip your way through the vineyards of Vouvray and the Loire Valley. Defining this region are its chateaus, including Chateau de Chambord, and Chenonceau, Catherine de Medicis’ former residence, and France’s second most popular monument after the palace of Versailles.

Visit Bayeux and learn about the sobering history of D-Day and the fearsome battles that scarred the French coast in World War 2. No visit to this region however would be complete without taking in Mont Saint-Michel. Its towering monastery rises above the sea, as rising tides come oh-so-close to making an island of this gorgeous hill town. From here, you may wish to return to Paris, or travel on to other parts of France, Belgium, or England to continue your adventure.

It provided an elevated vantage point from which large German guns with a range of 15 miles km (25 kilometers) could deliver fire upon both Omaha Beach and Utah Beach. The neutralization of these guns by the allied forces was the key to victory. Visit Sainte-Mère-Église, one of the first French villages to be liberated. It is famous for a paratrooper who remained attached to the bell tower of the church. Close to the church stands the Airborne Museum. There, you will learn more about the role played by the paratroopers in Operation Overlord.

The final stop will be Utah Beach, the westernmost beach in the combat zone, where 23,200 American soldiers landed on D-Day.

Day 24

Full Day Small-Group Mont Saint-Michel Tour

You will depart from Bayeux for a day trip to visit one of the most popular and emblematic sites in France: Mont Saint-Michel and its bay, a unique place between sky and sea. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the distinctive characteristic of being built on a rocky islet, surrounded by a magnificent bay with the highest tides in continental Europe. Your expert guide will make you discover all aspects and reveal all the secrets of its famous abbey. From here, you will admire one of the most beautiful and largest bays in the world. Stroll through the maze of streets in the village.

Visit the Benedictine Abbey founded at the beginning of the 8th century. It is one of the most important places of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages, a jewel of Romanesque, Gothic and flamboyant arts: the cloister, the refectory, and its authentic garden overlooking the sea.

At the end of the visit, you will have free time to have lunch and fully enjoy Mont Saint-Michel for two hours before heading back to Bayeux.
